The $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2), Fair Grounds
12th race – (3) Wells Bayou was the game second-place finisher in the Southwest (G2) at Oaklawn Park last time out. In only his fourth start, he stepped up to the Kentucky Derby trail and set a strong pace only to get beaten by just a length. Trainer Brad Cox decided to skip the Rebel at his home base to run in the Louisiana Derby. The son of Lookin At Lucky has tactical speed which should help as they the stretch-out to a mile and three-sixteenth. The other serious pace pressers are on the far outside of this 14 horse field. (10) Enforceable won the Lecomte (G3) and then was second in the Risen Star (G2) last time out. He got off to slow start in that race and just had too much to do. The son of Tapit will appreciate the added distance which will give him more time to make his big closing move. (1) Major Fed will be able to save ground from the rail after jumping from a maiden victory to finish second in a division of the Risen Star. He gets a major rider change to Joel Rosario who is a strong and patient rider with off the pace runners. (13) Silver State has never finished worse than third in his four-race career. Trainer Steve Asmussen worked him a fast six-furlongs and that is unusual for the Hall of Famer.
