Roger Attfield (winning trainer of Ickymasho [GB])

“I was so delighted (when jockey Jose Ortiz took the lead going past the finish the first time). I thought she’d either be on the lead or second early in the race, and I was a little concerned that she might be on the lead the whole way, which always bothers me a little bit. After he turned into the stretch and he made that decision, I said, ‘thank goodness, that’s a really good move there.’ It was a really, really good ride. I want to congratulate him on that.

“When he took command of the race and down the backside she opened up enough that I felt reasonably comfortable. I thought, please, God, don’t catch her now. She’s a gutsy mare. We’re just delighted with her.”

Jose Ortiz (winning rider)

“She was a little keen when we passed the eighth pole (the first time). I tried to cover her up and tried to get her to relax, but I wasn’t able to because they kept backing up the pace in front of me. She ran good for me when she was on the lead at Gulfstream, so I decided to let her go. I wanted to try to surprise them by taking the lead without using her so much. I felt somebody was coming at the eighth pole (nearing the finish of the race) so I had to ask for everything.”

Florent Geroux (rider of runner-up Gaining [GB])

“Great trip. There was a (slow) pace early and then midrace Ickymasho went to the lead and that was probably the winning move. In the stretch, I thought I could win and I felt like the leader was coming back to me. But I had too many lengths to make up.”

Tyler Baze (rider of third-place finisher and 26-1 longshot Coachwhip)

“This filly ran great. I thought I had a shot to win it if the winner actually didn’t (make that) move down the frontside the first time around. I had just gotten her relaxed, then she got a little rank again. I had to get her resettled. But she ran a really good race, and now she’s graded stakes-placed, so that was big.”
