$10,000 Runhappy Scholarship Returns as Part of Keeneland’s College Scholarship Day

March 31, 2017

LEXINGTON, KY (March 31, 2017) – For the second consecutive year, Jim and Linda McIngvale, owners of champion and Keeneland sales graduate Runhappy, will give away a $10,000 college scholarship during Keeneland’s College Scholarship Day on Friday, April 7, opening day of the 2017 Spring Meet. The Runhappy Scholarship will be awarded via random drawing to one lucky full-time student after the 8th race post parade.

“Runhappy has strong ties to Keeneland,” Jim McIngvale said. “He was a graduate of the Keeneland September (Yearling) Sale and went on to win some of his biggest races here at this track. So this is a great opportunity to commemorate his efforts, show our appreciation to Keeneland and, most importantly, help contribute to the education of young people.”

McIngvale purchased Runhappy, a colt by Super Saver, for $200,000 from breeder and consignor Ashview Farm at Keeneland’s 2013 September Sale. In consecutive starts in 2015, Runhappy won the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G3) and TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). He received the 2015 Eclipse Award as champion male sprinter.

Runhappy entered stud this year at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky.

2016 Runhappy Scholarship Winner Pursues Global Studies

The winner of the inaugural Runhappy Scholarship was Sarah Gossett of Hartford, Kentucky, a student at the University of Kentucky who had never been to Keeneland until College Scholarship Day a year ago. Now a fifth-year senior, she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in integrated strategic communications with a minor in political science and a certification in global studies.

Winning the Runhappy Scholarship marked an incredible turn of events for Gossett.

“My father had passed away on Dec. 31, and I totaled my car on Feb. 29, so the year had the worst start imaginable,” she said. “My friends and I joked on our way to the track about what we would do if we won the $10,000 scholarship. I had said I would use it to pay off loans.”

Instead, Gossett used the Runhappy Scholarship to continue her education abroad, traveling last summer to Cape Town, South Arica, to study marketing and advertising and spending spring break in Beijing to study Chinese media and society.

“At that time, I needed something incredible to happen to change my life, and winning the Runhappy Scholarship was exactly that,” she said. “It meant getting the opportunity to see the world and start my life back onto the path I wanted and needed to be on. Just a big thank you to the Runhappy team for their kindness and generosity.”

Gossett said she planned to use the remainder of the scholarship to go to London this summer to study British media.

Keeneland Event has Awarded Nearly $300,000 Since Inception

Keeneland partners with the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association (KTA) to host the popular College Scholarship Day during each Spring and Fall race meet. Thousands of students from colleges and universities throughout Kentucky and beyond attend the event and have the opportunity to register to win one of ten $1,000 scholarships awarded following each of the day’s races. Since its inception in the fall of 2002, Keeneland and the KTA have awarded nearly $300,000.

“The students who participate in College Scholarship Day add energy and excitement to opening day of Keeneland’s Spring Meet,” Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston said. “Keeneland appreciates everyone who contributes to the event, which definitely makes a difference to the scholarship winners.”

Admission on College Scholarship Day is free to students with a college ID. The first 2,000 students to register will receive a Keeneland College Scholarship Day T-shirt courtesy of Coca-Cola or a Southern Proper hat. Students will be able to enjoy music, free snacks and prize drawings in Keeneland’s College Zone in the North Terrace.
