LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 8, 2016) – Keeneland’s 2016 Fall Meet, which opens today, marks the track’s 80th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, Barn Notes throughout the Fall Meet will look back at memorable races and track highlights from Keeneland’s rich history.

Here are a few highlights from Oct. 8:

1983: Claiborne Farm’s champion Swale wins the Breeders’ Futurity (G2) (now the Grade 1, $500,000 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, which will be run today.) The following year, he is second in the Lexington at Keeneland and wins the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont (G1). 

1988: Opening day of the 16-day Fall Meet that introduces Pick Six wagering. … Rip Dabbs wins the fourth race and pays a record $255.40. … Keeneland begins sending its simulcast signal to Turfway Park, Ellis Park and Bluegrass Downs, allowing patrons at those tracks to wager on Keeneland’s races.

1995: Ogden Mills Phipps’ Hall of Famer Inside Information wins the Spinster (G1) by a head during a championship campaign that culminates in a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Belmont Park.

2011: Team Block’s Never Retreat establishes the First Lady (G1) stakes record of 1:34.08 with her 1½-length victory.
