Always Dreaming, Abel Tasman Produce Keeneland September Sale Derby/Oaks Double

May 8, 2017

LEXINGTON, KY (May 8, 2017) – Keeneland’s 2015 September Yearling Sale is represented by newly minted classic winners Always Dreaming and Abel Tasman, who swept the 2017 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1), respectively, at Churchill Downs this weekend.

Always Dreaming was bred in Kentucky by Santa Rosa Partners and consigned to the September Sale by Dromoland Farm, agent. Santa Rosa Partners comprises Irishmen Mike Ryan and Gerry Dilger, owner of Dromoland Farm.

Dilger has the distinction of selling both the 2016 and 2017 winners of the Kentucky Derby as yearlings at the September Sale. In addition to Always Dreaming, Dromoland consigned 2016 Derby victor Nyquist, who brought $230,000.

Dilger wouldn’t say if a hat trick of three in a row is possible but, “I sold some very nice horses at the last September Sale. I’m a lucky guy. It’s great, and I have to say I’d be happy if the next guy could do it too. I’ve had a lot of luck and I’m just delighted.”

A son of Bodemeister, Always Dreaming sold as Hip 45 in Book 1 of the September Sale and brought a final bid of $350,000 from Steven W. Young, who signed the ticket on behalf of partners Anthony and Mary Ellen Bonomo and Vinnie and Teresa Viola.

Lookin At Lee, second in the Derby, also sold in Book 1 of the 2015 September Sale. Penn Sales, agent, consigned the colt to the sale, where he sold to L & N Racing for $70,000.

China Horse Club and Clearsky Farms’ Abel Tasman, a fellow alumnus of the 2015 September Sale, put in a determined run to capture the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, coming from last in the field of 14 to win impressively by 1¼ lengths.

Keeneland sales graduates Divisidero and Beach Patrol finished 1-2 in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill on Derby Day. It was the second consecutive win in the stakes for Divisidero.
