Keeneland September yearlings to Woodward (G1) winners to 2016 September Sires & Dams

The 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale features an array of top sires, many of which were September Sale graduates themselves. In honor of Saturday’s Woodward (G1) at Saratoga, we look back at three memorable winners – Lemon Drop KidCurlinQuality Road – and recall their time as yearlings in the Keeneland sales ring and their unforgettable victories at Saratoga.

Lemon Drop Kid

1997 September yearling

During a four-month period in 2000, Lemon Drop Kid captured four consecutive graded stakes, culminating with a win in the Woodward (G1) at Belmont. His record earned for him an Eclipse Award as champion older horse. Lemon Drop Kid will be represented by 57 yearlings in the 2016 September Sale.

Curlin

2005 September yearling

The Woodward (G1) was one of four Grade/Group 1 stakes won by Hall of Famer Curlin in 2008 on his way to a second consecutive Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year. He is represented by 49 yearlings in the 2016 September Sale.

Quality Road

2007 September yearling

Quality Road won three Grade 1 stakes in 2010, topped by an impressive 4¾-length victory in the Woodward (G1). He is represented by 46 yearlings in the 2016 September Sale.

In 2011, September Sale graduate Havre de Grace become only the second filly to win the Woodward (G1), defeating males to be named Horse of the Year. Havre de Grace’s colt by leading sire War Front will be featured in Book 1, Session 2 of the 2016 September Sale.
