Beholder, Tepin Take Keeneland Connections To Racing Hall of Fame

May 11, 2022

Two champions – Keeneland sales graduate Beholder and multiple Keeneland stakes winner Tepin – are among the eight horses and people selected for induction this year to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York. Beholder and Tepin both were chosen in their first year of eligibility.

Other inductees are racehorses Hillsdale and Royal Heroine (IRE) along with trainer Oscar White, via the Historic Review Committee, and Pillars of the Turf selections James Cox Brady, Marshall Cassidy and James Ben Ali Haggin.

The class of 2022 will be enshrined Aug. 5.

In 2011, owner Spendthrift Farm purchased Beholder for $180,000 at Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale from breeder Clarkland Farm. Beholder won four Eclipse Awards and three Breeders’ Cup races while earning $6.1 million with 18 wins in 26 starts from 2012-2016. Trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, Beholder is the only horse since 1976 to win at least one Grade 1 race every year from ages 2 through 6.

Multiple champion Tepin won three stakes at Keeneland: 2015 First Lady (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), the latter over males, and 2016 Coolmore Jenny Wiley (G1). She won 13 races in 23 starts and earned more than $4.4 million from 2013-2016. Mark Casse trained Tepin, who also won the 2016 Queen Anne (G1) at Royal Ascot in England, for owner Robert E. Masterson.
