Champion Malathaat Romps to Juddmonte Spinster Victory on Fall Stars Sunday

October 9, 2022

Andthewinneris, Private Creed win stakes

Shadwell Stable’s champion Malathaat roared past champion Letruska at the top of the stretch and drew clear by 5¼ lengths to win the 67th running of the $600,000 Juddmonte Spinster (G1) for fillies and mares Sunday afternoon.

Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, Malathaat covered the 1 1/8 miles on a fast main track in 1:51.05. The victory is the fifth in the race for Pletcher and the second for Velazquez.

Pletcher’s other victories came with Panty Raid (2007), In Lingerie (2012), Get Lucky (2015) and Valiance (2020). Velazquez won aboard In Lingerie.

With the victory, Malathaat earned a fees-paid berth to the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) to be run here Nov. 5. She finished third, beaten a half-length, in that race last year at Del Mar.

Malathaat gave Pletcher his third “Win and You’re In” Breeders’ Cup Challenge victory in two days here coming on the heels of Forte’s win in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) for the FanDuel Juvenile (G1) and Annapolis’ victory in the Coolmore Turf Mile (G1) for the FanDuel Mile (G1) Presented by PDJF.

Played Hard, 2021 winner Letruska and Princess of Cairo engaged in a three-way sprint to the first turn with Malathaat content to save ground along the inside behind the trio.

On the backstretch, Letruska took control after a half-mile in :47.90 and 6 furlongs in 1:12.25 as Velazquez moved Malathaat off the rail to the outside for clear running. On the far turn, Malathaat quickly ranged up alongside Letruska and put her away and then shook off a minor bid from Army Wife to complete a solo run to the finish.

A Keeneland sales graduate, Malathaat is a Kentucky-bred daughter of Curlin out of the A.P. Indy mare Dreaming of Julia. The victory is her fifth Grade 1 triumph, and she remained perfect in three Keeneland starts with victories in the 2021 Central Bank Ashland (G1) and the Baird Doubledogdare (G3) to open her 2022 campaign.

Malathaat added $372,000 to her bankroll Sunday and swelled her career earnings to $2,750,825 with a record of 13-9-3-1.

Malathaat returned $2.88 and $2.10 with no show wagering. Army Wife, ridden by Luis Saez, returned $8.14 to place and finished 3¼ lengths in front of Played Hard, who was 8¼ lengths in front of Letruska. Princess of Cairo finished fifth.

Andthewinneris is the winner of Castle & Key Bourbon

Susan Moulton’s homebred Andthewinneris swept to the front at midstretch and pulled clear to post a 2 3/4-length victory in the 32nd running of the $350,000 Castle & Key Bourbon (G2) for 2-year-olds.

Trained by Wayne Catalano and ridden by Flavien Prat, Andthewinneris covered the 1 1/16 miles on the firm turf course in a stakes-record 1:41.27. It is the second victory in the race for Catalano with the previous triumph coming in 2013 with Poker Player.

With the victory, Andthewinneris earned a fees-paid berth to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) to be run here Nov. 4. For Moulton and Catalano, it is their second “Win and You’re In” Breeders’ Cup Challenge victory of the Fall Stars Weekend after winning the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G2) on Friday with Manny Wah.

Andthewinneris is a Kentucky-bred son of Oscar Performance out of the Scat Daddy mare Run Like the Boss. With a record of 4-2-0-2, Andthewinneris earned $198,013 with Sunday’s victory to boost his bankroll to $282,243.

In the Castle & Key Bourbon, Panama (GB) led the field of 12 through fractions of :22.34, :45.81 and 1:10.89 with Deer District in closest pursuit and Andthewinneris racing in the clear in mid-pack. Deer District took over in the upper stretch but Prat had Andthewinneris in high gear and roared on by passing the eighth pole and coasting to victory.

Andthewinneris returned $10.18, $5.54 and $4.52. Deer District, ridden by Martin Garcia, returned $5.92 and $4.30 and finished three-quarters of a length in front of Really Good who paid $4.72 to show under Tyler Gaffalione.

It was another half-length back to Rarified Flair who was followed in order by Our Dream Rye’d, Boppy O, Reckoning Force, Accident, B Minor, Gigante, Panama and Hendrickson.

Private Creed sets stakes record in Indian Summer Presented by Keeneland Select

Mike McCarty’s Private Creed swept past favored No Nay Hudson (IRE) inside the sixteenth pole and went on to post a three-quarters of a length victory over a fast-closing Mo Stash in the fifth running of the $250,000 Indian Summer (L) Presented by Keeneland Select for 2-year-olds.

Trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden Joel Rosario, Private Creed covered the 5 ½ furlongs on the firm turf course in a stakes-record 1:02.30.

With the victory, Private Creed earned a fees-paid berth to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) to be run here Nov. 4.

Ghent led a tight pack through an opening quarter-mile in :21.68 as Rosario kept Private Creed in the clear while running in the second flight of horses. At the head of the stretch, Ghent started to retreat with No Nay Hudson taking over at the eighth pole.

By then Private Creed was rolling on the outside, overtaking No Nay Hudson passing the sixteenth pole and going on to the victory.

A Keeneland sales graduate, Private Creed is a Kentucky-bred son of Jimmy Creed out of the Sky Mesa mare South Andros. Now a two-time stakes winner, Private Creed owns a record of 4-3-0-1 and has earnings of $509,313 of which $145,313 came Sunday.

Private Creed returned $7.28, $4.02 and $2.44. Mo Stash, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, returned $7.30 and $3.64 and finished a length in front of No Nay Hudson, who paid $2.46 to show under John Velazquez.

It was another length back to Ghent, who was followed in order by Mounsieur Coco, Bourbon Therapy, Kbcya Later, Revere Note, Numero Seis and Castelmola.
