Fenwick Works Half-Mile in Preparation for Toyota Blue Grass

April 4, 2022

Villa Rosa Farm’s Fenwick worked a half-mile in :49.60 over a fast track Monday morning in preparation for a start in Saturday’s $1 million Toyota Blue Grass (G1).

Working on his own at 9 a.m. with exercise rider Roger Horgan aboard, Fenwick produced fractions of :13.20, :25.80, :37.60 and :49.60 and galloped out five-eighths in 1:02.80.

Watching the work were owner Jeremia Rudan and trainer David Fisher along with Kevin McKathan, who broke Fenwick in Florida after his purchase as a yearling.

Fenwick earned his shot at the Toyota Blue Grass with a 5¼-length maiden victory on March 12 at Tampa Bay Downs with Paco Lopez aboard. He defeated Grade 1-placed Commandperformance in that race.

“We ran him right off the farm,” Fisher said about Fenwick, who was winless in four prior starts in New York and Louisiana.

Fenwick worked at Fisher’s farm in Ocala before shipping to Keeneland last Friday. Lopez retains the mount for the Toyota Blue Grass.

“This was the logical move,” McKathan said about running in the son of Curlin in the Toyota Blue Grass. “We are putting him in the deep end and see how he paddles.”
