McPeek Reviews His Multiple Kentucky Derby Chances

April 5, 2022

This year could mark the second time trainer Kenny McPeek has had multiple starters in the Kentucky Derby (G1) following his duo of Toyota Blue Grass (G1) winner Java’s War and Frac Daddy in 2013.

McPeek’s headliners this season include Smile Happy, a candidate for Saturday’s Toyota Blue Grass, and Tiz the Bomb, winner of the Castle & Key Bourbon (G2) last year on Keeneland’s turf course, who won the April 2 Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) at Turfway Park.

His other Derby hopefuls are Rattle N Roll, winner of the 2021 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland, and Oaklawn Park-based Dash Attack. Both are under consideration for the Stonestreet Lexington (G3) at Keeneland on April 16.

“It is exciting to have two Derby contenders, and the others might check that box, too,” McPeek said. “It is an enviable position.”

Smile Happy, third in the Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds in New Orleans in his most recent race, was scheduled to leave Florida Tuesday, but his trip was delayed because of storms in Georgia. The son of Runhappy is expected to arrive at Churchill Downs on Wednesday and ship to Keeneland on Saturday morning for the Toyota Blue Grass.

McPeek’s roster of six Kentucky Derby starters began with Tejano Run’s runner-up performance in 1995. His other representatives are Deputy Warlock (2000), Harlan’s Holiday (2002), Noble’s Promise (2010), Java’s War and Frac Daddy.

On Friday, McPeek will send out Cocktail Moments in the Central Bank Ashland (G1), which he won with Take Charge Lady in 2002 and Rosalind in 2014 (dead-heat winner with Room Service). Cocktail Moments comes to the Central Bank Ashland after a third-place effort in the Davona Dale (G2) Presented by FanDuel at Gulfstream Park on March 5.

“It is a big step up for her but it is not a big field,” he said. “She is doing well and deserves a chance.”
