Buy TicketsMadaket Stables, Michael Dubb and Louis Lazzinnaro’s Beaute Cachee (FR), a 25-1 longshot, grabbed the lead shortly after the start and never trailed the rest of the way in posting a 1½-length victory over favored English Rose (IRE) in the 36th running of the $511,250 Jenny Wiley (G1) for fillies and mares Saturday afternoon.
Other stakes winners on the Saturday program were Encino in the Stonestreet Lexington (G3) for 3-year-olds and Roses for Debra in the Giant’s Causeway (G3) for fillies and mares.
Trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Frankie Dettori, Beaute Cachee completed the 1 1/16 miles on a turf course rated good in 1:42.90 and rewarded her backers with a race record $53.68 win payoff for $2. It is the second Keeneland stakes victory for Dettori.
The victory continued a remarkable run in the Jenny Wiley for Brown. He has saddled the winner of the race seven times, won the past three runnings and six of the past seven. His previous winners in the race are Ball Dancing (2015), Sistercharlie (IRE) (2018), Rushing Fall (2019 and 2020), Regal Glory (2022) and In Italian (GB) (2023).
English Rose was first out of the gate, but by the time the field reached the first turn, Dettori had Beaute Cachee in front. Beaute Cachee maintained a daylight advantage over English Rose through fractions of :24.18, :48.65 and 1:13.85 with Didia (ARG) third and Surge Capacity fourth.
The running order stayed that way to the finish as no runners threatened from the back of the field. The winning mutuel broke the previous record of $53.40 established by Misspitch in 1994.
Beaute Cachee is a 5-year-old daughter of Literato out of the Hurricane Run mare Sign and Seal. It is the first graded stakes victory for Beaute Cachee, who improved her record to 18-4-5-2 and increased her earnings to $539,462 with Saturday’s $290,625 check.
Beaute Cachee returned $53.68, $17.30 and $11.10. English Rose, ridden by William Buick, returned $4.12 and $3.32 and finished 1¾ lengths in front of Didia, who paid $3.98 to show under Jose Ortiz.
It was another length back to Surge Capacity in fourth with Walkathon, Fluffy Socks, Gina Romantica, Star Fortress (IRE), Elusive Princess (FR) and Embrace Me following in order.
Encino leads all the way to win Stonestreet Lexington
Godolphin’s homebred Encino took the lead out of the gate, repulsed a stretch bid from The Wine Steward and went on to post a three-quarters of a length victory in the 42nd running of the $365,500 Stonestreet Lexington (G3) for 3-year-olds.
The victory marked Godolphin’s 16th graded stakes win at Keeneland and earned for them the Keeneland Pitcher as part of the track’s signature Milestone Trophy Program.
Encino, trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Florent Geroux, completed the mile and a sixteenth on a fast main track in 1:43.93. It is the third consecutive victory in the race for Cox and fourth overall. It is third win for Geroux, all coming with Cox.
Cox won last year with First Mission and in 2022 and 2019 won with Tawny Port and Owendale, respectively, with Geroux aboard.
The victory was worth 20 points toward a possible spot in the starting gate for the 150th running of the $5 million Kentucky Derby (G1) Presented by Woodford Reserve on May 4 at Churchill Downs.
The Derby is limited to the top 20 point earners and invitees. With the victory, Encino boosted his total to 40 points, good for 21st place on the Road to the Kentucky Derby in the series that began last September.
Encino led the field of nine through fractions of :23.55, :47.28 and 1:11.94 with The Wine Steward tracking in second. The top two began to pull away from the field on the turn with The Wine Steward nearly drawing on even terms in the lane before Encino spurted away.
A Kentucky-bred son of Nyquist out of the Bernardini mare Glittering Jewel, Encino improved his record to 4-3-1-0 with his third consecutive victory, The Stonestreet Lexington marked his first race on dirt following three outings on the all-weather surface at Turfway Park. The victory was worth $235,600, and Saturday’s check increased his earnings to $378,315.
Encino returned $8.62, $3.94 and $3.42. The Wine Steward, ridden by Luis Saez, paid $3.32 and $2.88 and finished 8¼ lengths in front of Dilger (IRE), who returned $9.42 to show under Tyler Gaffalione.
It was another half-length back to Secret Chat, who was followed in order by Footprint, Liberal Arts, Hades, Lucky Jeremy and How’s Ur Attitude.
Favored Roses for Debra wins Giant’s Causeway
Cheyenne Stable and John O’Meara’s Roses for Debra swept to the lead at the sixteenth pole and drew off for a 1¼-length victory over Love Reigns (IRE) to win the 27th running of the $260,713 Giant’s Causeway for fillies and mares.
Trained by Christophe Clement and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Roses for Debra completed the 5½ furlongs on a turf course rated good in 1:02.79. It is the third consecutive victory in the race and fourth overall for Ortiz with previous victories coming on Morticia in 2019, Campanelle (IRE) in 2022 and Twilight Gleaming (IRE) in 2023.
B G Warrior raced off to an unopposed lead with an opening quarter-mile in :21.28 as Roses for Debra raced in fifth. Ortiz kept Roses for Debra in the clear and moved four wide at the top of the stretch to set after the leaders.
Elm Drive took over for B G Warrior at midstretch but could not fend off the bid from Roses for Debra. She yielded the runner-up spot to Love Reigns in deep stretch.
Now a winner of five consecutive races against her own sex, Roses for Debra is a 5-year-old Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Liam’s Map out of the Bernardini mare Essential Rose. A Keeneland sales graduate, Roses for Debra improved her record to 12-8-1-1 and boosted her earnings to $579,868 with Saturday’s $141,438 check.
Roses for Debra paid $5.52, $3.70 and $3.16. Love Reigns, ridden by Joel Rosario, returned $6.78 and $5.24 and finished a length in front of Elm Drive, who paid $4.36 to show under Luis Saez.
It was another half-length back to Secret Money, who was followed in order by B G Warrior, Play the Music, Bling, Oeuvre, Breeze Easy (GB), Port Townsend, High Class and Kissed by Fire.
