Yaupon colt sells for $825,000

Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale conducted its seventh of 12 sessions Monday with increases in all categories, led by nearly $33 million in through-the-ring sales. At $825,000, the day’s highest-priced horse was a son of Yaupon purchased by Donato Lanni, agent for FRC/Starlight/Madaket. The lone purchase made the group the day’s leading buyer.

On Monday, Keeneland sold 285 yearlings through the ring for $32,941,500, an increase of 9.41% from the seventh session last year when 279 horses brought $30,107,000. The average of $115,584 rose 7.11% from $107,910 in 2025, while the median jumped 20% from $75,000 to $90,000. 

Cumulatively, gross through-the-ring sales are $462,980,500 for 1,435 yearlings to mark a 3.41% increase from the same period last year when 1,495 horses sold for $447,729,000. The average of  $322,634 is 7.73% above $299,484 in 2025, and the median of $225,000 is 12.50% higher than $200,000.  

The number of yearlings sold this year for $1 million or more is 70 compared to 56 in 2025.

Consigned by Runnymede Farm, agent, Monday’s session-topping colt is out of stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Beautician, by Dehere. He is from the family of Grade 2 winners Red Ruby, Crupi and Lady At Peace along with Grade 3 winner Mo Tom.

In other sales, 

FMQ Stables and Three Chimneys Farm paid $525,000 for Capriciousness, a filly by Volatile who is a half-sister to stakes winner Meringue and recent Grade 1 runner-up Oscar. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent for Messingw Farm, she is from the family of Group 2 winner Michita and Grade 3 winner Thunder Kitten.

Good Horse for MorPlay Racing spent $425,000 for a filly by Life Is Good consigned by Woods Edge Farm, agent. Out of the winning Haynesfield mare Haynesfest, she is from the family of Grade/Group 1 winners Varda, Overarching, Lady of the House and Abscond; Grade 2 winner Cambodia; and Grade 3 winner Danse Macabre.

Life Is Good is the sire of a colt consigned by Denali Stud, agent for WinStar Farm Bred & Raised and purchased by Maddie Mattmiller, agent, for $400,000. He is the first foal out of Dontmesswithjammer, a winning daughter of Candy Ride (ARG) who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Played Hard. The colt is from the family of Grade/Group 1 winners Well Armed, American Patriot, Patch Adams and Cyberknife. 

Four horses — including two purchased by Three Amigos — brought $375,000 apiece. 

The first was a filly by Corniche out of the Awesome Again mare Vitellia. A half-sister to stakes winner Arts in the Park, she is from the family of Canadian champion Mrs. Barbara; Grade 2 winner Smokey Fire; and stakes winners Utterly Cool, Ghost Fleet and Flame Mingo. 

Gainesway, agent, which consigned the filly, led consignors Monday with sales of $5,061,000 for 39 yearlings.

Three Amigos also paid $375,000 a colt by Vekoma consigned by Lane’s End, agent. Out of winner Malibu Cat, by Malibu Moon, he is from the family of Grade 2 winner Value Engineering and Grade 3 winner High Velocity. The colt’s 2-year-old half-sister, Malibu Dancer, won her career debut on Aug. 29 at Kentucky Downs.

Gainesway, agent, consigned a colt by Yaupon sold to Gracie Bloodstock, agent, for $375,000. Out of Cherry Marie, by Carpe Diem, he is from the family of Grade 2 winner Lord Couronne along with Grade 3 winners Derby Kitten, Cherry Jubilee, Traverse City, Lord Golazo and Flower Party (IRE).

Alistair Roden Bloodstock spent $375,000 on a colt by Life Is Good from the family of Grade 1 winners Awesome Humor, Emcee and Constitution. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent for St. Elias Stables, he is out of stakes winner Whoa Nellie, by Orb. The colt also is from the family of Grade 2 winners Surfer, Boynton and New York Thunder as well as Grade 3 winners Secret Money, Marzo and Jacaranda.
