Keeneland-Based American Rascal Runs Thursday at Royal Ascot

Stonestreet Stables’ Keeneland-based American Rascal, a colt by Curlin who is the first foal out of European superstar Lady Aurelia, is entered in Thursday’s Norfolk (G2) on the third day of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting in England.

Trained by Wesley Ward, who has 12 wins at Royal Ascot, American Rascal opened his career at Keeneland on April 20 with a 10¼-length win while racing 4½ furlongs on dirt. He was timed in :51.21, the fastest of the meet at the distance.

Joel Rosario rode American Rascal in his debut and will be aboard the colt in the Norfolk.

For Stonestreet, Ward trained Lady Aurelia to win the 2016 Queen Mary (G2) and 2017 King’s Stand (G1) at Royal Ascot. The daughter of Scat Daddy received the Cartier Racing Award as Europe’s 2-year-old filly of the year.

Race 1: Norfolk (G2) (2-year-olds, 5 furlongs) at 9:30 a.m.• American Rascal.• Trainer George Weaver, who won Wednesday’s Queen Mary (G2) with Crimson Advocate, will send out No Nay Mets (IRE). Frankie Dettori will ride the colt, who won the May 13 Royal Palm Juvenile at Gulfstream by 3½ lengths in his debut. • AMO Racing, Rachel O’Callaghan and Giselle De Aguiar’s Valiant Force, a colt by Malibu Moon, is the graduate of two Keeneland sales. At the 2021 November Breeding Stock Sale, he was consigned as a weanling by Mill Ridge Sales, agent, and sold to J.R.L. 3 Racing for $75,000. Eaton Sales, agent, consigned him to the 2022 September Sale, where he sold to Robson Aguiar/Roger O’Callaghan for $100,000. Rossa Ryan will ride Valiant Force for trainer Adrian Murray.

Race 2: King George V Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (3-year-olds1½ miles) at 10:05 a.m.• Bertinelli, a colt by Justify, sold to Lanni Bloodstock for $750,000 at the 2021 September Sale from the consignment of Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent. Bred by Orpendale/Chelston/Wynatt, he races for Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Westerburg. Aidan O’Brien trains Bertinelli, who will be ridden by Ryan Moore. 

Race 4: Gold Cup (G1) (4-year-olds and up, 2½ miles) at 11:20 a.m.• Big Call, a 6-year-old gelding by Animal Kingdom, is a graduate of two Keeneland sales. Brookdale Sales, agent, consigned him as a weanling to the 2017 November Sale, where he sold for $65,000 to Springhouse Farm. Paramount Sales, agent, offered him at the 2018 September Sale. Big Call was bred by Spruce Lane Farm, Copper Beach Stables, Grand Crue Farm et al. Stephane Pasquier will ride for trainer Christophe Ferland, who owns Big Call with Flora Scott.

Friday, June 23

Race 2: Commonwealth Cup (G1) (3-year-olds, 6 furlongs) at 10:05 a.m.• Godolphin’s Mischief Magic (IRE) won the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) at Keeneland. Trained by Charlie Appleby, he will be ridden by William Buick.• Eaton Sales, agent, offered KHK Racing’s Sakheer (IRE) at the 2021 September Sale. David Egan will ride the colt for trainer Roger Varian.

Race 6: King Edward VII (G2) (3-year-old males, 1½ miles) at 12:35 p.m.​• Varian will send out King of Steel, purchased by AMO Racing for $200,000 at the 2021 September Sale. Bred by BCF Services, the son of Wootton Bassett was consigned by Gainesway, agent. He will be ridden by Kevin Stott.

Saturday, June 24

Race 3Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee (G1) (4-year-olds and up, 6 furlongs) at 11:20 a.m.• Reeves Thoroughbred Racing’s Big Invasion, second in the June 10 Jaipur (G1) at Belmont Park, is trained by Christophe Clement. Bred by John O’Meara, Big Invasion was consigned by Vinery Sales, agent, to the 2020 September Sale and sold to Taproot Bloodstock, agent, for $72,000. Jim Crowley will ride the 4-year-old son of Declaration of War.
