Keeneland-Based Kentucky Derby, Belmont Winner Golden Tempo Breezes Half-Mile in :48.40

Colt to leave Saturday for Saratoga Race Course

Keeneland-based multiple classic winner Golden Tempo on Friday worked 4 furlongs in :48.40 in preparation for his next start, the Aug. 29, $1.25 million DraftKings Travers (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. Regular work rider Ameth Gonzalez was aboard the 3-year-old son of Curlin for trainer Cherie DeVaux.

Working by himself over a fast track, Golden Tempo produced fractions of :12.80, :24.60, :36.60, 48.40, out five-eighths in 1:01.40 and out three-quarters in 1:14.80.

“Beautiful work. First work back since the Belmont (G1),” assistant trainer David Carroll said. “Normally he breezes in company, but he went by himself today and was in hand the whole way. Couldn’t ask for more — really happy with what I saw.”

A homebred racing for Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable, Golden Tempo has resided at DeVaux’s barn at the Keeneland Training Center — commonly called “Rice Road” after the road that runs from Versailles Road through the west side of Keeneland’s property to Van Meter Road. In the spring, he twice left Keeneland to win the May 2, $5 million Kentucky Derby (G1) Presented by Woodford Reserve and the June 6, $2 million Belmont Presented by NYRA Bets.

Golden Tempo has won four races in six starts and earned $4,633,000. He is expected to leave for Saratoga on Saturday, July 18 to prepare for the Travers.
