Popular Lead Pony Harley Gearing Up For Kentucky Derby Assignment

The most well-known horse during any Keeneland meet is arguably not a racehorse but Harley, one of the lead ponies that accompanies the Thoroughbreds to the starting gate. The supersized dark horse with a black-dotted white rump is easy to recognize and impossible to forget.

When the Keeneland season closes, Harley and his owner/rider, Monica “Monnie” Goetz, will relocate to Churchill Downs, where their assignments will include escorting a starter in the Kentucky Derby (G1) Presented by Woodford Reserve post parade in front of a worldwide audience. Last year, they accompanied winner Sovereignty. The attention Harley receives is just one reason his likeness is replicated in a collectable Breyer brand model, in holiday ornaments and on other décor.

Harley is an American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft (ASHD), a modern breed developed by crossing the Percheron drafts with lighter Appaloosas to create attention-getting carriage horses for hire. The breed is touted for its versatility, durability and gentle nature.

Lead ponies can be any breed, and many are unraced Thoroughbreds or former racers. Two other high-profile types at Keeneland this spring are Rip and Jack, who are closely related to Harley and registered with the ASHD association.

Despite her inadvertent fame with Harley, Goetz remains focused on her horsemanship. As the daughter of a Nebraska-based Thoroughbred trainer, she grew up at the track and began working as an exercise rider while still a teenager. She relocated to Kentucky in 1985. Both she and 16-year-old Harley thrive on work and show no signs of slowing down.

“This is all I know,” Goetz said. “It’s been a great life for me. As for Harley, he will tell me when he is ready to retire. He is very sound and his breed is made for working.”

Goetz and Harley are fixtures at Churchill and Keeneland especially on major racing days like the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be at Keeneland Oct. 30-31.
