Edgar Morales (winning rider of Just for Pipa)
“It worked out great. Cutting back half a furlong (having won at 6 1/2 furlongs in his first race) was the only question, but I think the pace set up for us and he does have a run, so we just turned for home and got them.”
On winning his first Keeneland stakes
“It’s great. My first career win ever was here, and my first stakes now (at Keeneland) — it’s great to have it.”
Greg Foley (winning trainer)
“At the three-eighths pole, I thought we were probably going to be third. He was a pretty good ways back. But at the eighth pole — I’m watching the race by myself on a TV — (I thought) ‘He can there from here.’ He ran great, he’s trained great. He’s a nice colt.
“Congrats to (owners) Hans and Ana (Maron of Saints or Sinners). (Just for Pipa) is a homebred; they have the mama (Arya’slightnbolt). They’re great people. It’s great to win anywhere but especially here at Keeneland (knowing) how tough it is here. This horse can run all day. He’s got a bright future.”
Ana Maron (of winning owner Saints or Sinners)
On winning with Just for Pipa, named for Ana Maron’s late father
“It’s very special — I’m going to cry now. It just means a lot. I wanted to do something special for my dad. He and I were always very close. No matter what I was doing, he was always very supportive. When we were into horse racing, he didn’t know anything about it but he always asked, came to the races, mostly at Santa Anita and Del Mar. He spent time there, was amazed, giving carrots to the horses. So when he passed away two years ago, I wanted to find something to honor him and carry on, and we had this homebred at our farm. He was bred by Justify, and I played around with the name and I said to Hans, ‘I’ve got the perfect horse for my dad, Just for Pipa,’ honoring Justify, his sire, and then also my dad, Pipa. So happy.”
Tyler Gaffalione (rider of runner-up Conviction)
“We won the battle, but we didn’t win the war. Huge effort on his part, very brave. Very happy with him."
Jose Ortiz (rider of third-place finisher and beaten favorite Booked)
“I broke good. (Conviction) broke good too, so I went after him. I paid the price at the end.”
