Luis Saez (winning rider of Serenas Ghost)
“I had my position in the clear and tried to make my move right there, but the horse in the lead came out and I almost clipped heels, so I had to check and come to the rail. She responded after that. She proved she’s an amazing filly and (trainer) Joe (Sharp) always does an amazing job with all his horses. I’m so glad to be a part.”
Joe Sharp (winning trainer)
“It’s really exciting. I trained her mom (Sirenusa) and her dad (Girvin), and she really seems like a perfect combination of both of them. Both horses were extremely gritty and just loved the game, and she’s displayed that since day one. My assistant Kylie Wellington had her up at Turfway and had a lot of confidence going into her first race (maiden special at Horseshoe Indiana Sept. 11, which she won). I was watching the replay during the post parade and started to get excited again because the way (today’s) race unfolded was very similar to the first time out.”
On her ability to overcome the unexpected shift to the rail in the stretch
“That’s encouraging. Obviously, moving forward, at the end of the month (in the John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf-G1) there’s going to be a lot of that, so she’s going to have to have the willingness to win, and she seems to have that.”
Brian Hernandez Jr. (rider of runner-up Seneca Park)
“We had a great trip. I was on the rail and I asked her left-handed one time and she drifted off, and the winner was able to shoot up the inside. The filly to my inside (Serenas Ghost), she out quickened us from the sixteenth pole home. You could see that filly coming and I tried to close it back off on her, but if we'd have completely shut the door we would’ve gotten taken down.”
“She showed what a nice filly she is for her first time going two turns and almost get home. She showed the quality and grit she has.”
Cristian Torres (rider of third-place finisher Mel Went Home)
“Great trip, she broke well like she always does. I was just a little behind the winner the whole way around. We went to the quarter pole and I was waiting. When the hole opened up, I asked her and she responded pretty well. I’m very happy with her. She’s still a maiden, but the way she’s running and in her previous races and today, there’s no doubt that she’s got a lot of talent.”
