Fernando De La Cruz (winning rider of Joe Shiesty)
“He put me in position and the last sixteenth he fought really good and came back. He’s such a nice horse.”
Eric Foster (winning trainer)
“I told Brooklyn, my wife, after the race, ‘Having a fair race and feeling like everybody had a fair shot, and they hooked Joe coming down the stretch, and for him to fight back and put a head in front is just testimony to his heart.’ We know he’s got speed and when you give that much early, you have to have a lot of dig in and put your whole heart into it. I told the guys coming in the tunnel, ‘This is a horse here who laid it down. He wasn’t prancing. He gave everything he had at the time he needed to do it.’ ”
Jose Ortiz (rider of runner-up No Nay Hudson-IRE)
“It was a great trip. It was unlucky — Joe Shiesty is very, very good. He liked the fight and he put up a great race today. I think it was a good race for my horse (No Nay Hudson). Seems like good prep for the Breeders’ Cup. I think he likes it here.”
“Passing the three-sixteenths (pole), going to the eighth pole, I thought I was going to get there. They were coming back to me a little bit and I was behind the 10 horse (Doncho) when I thought I was in the clear. He responded really well.”
Irad Ortiz Jr. (rider of third-place finisher and beaten favorite Doncho)
“It was a very good trip. The horse put me in a good position. I know the winner is a fighter, so I tried to stay close. Nobody went with him so I knew I had to get a jump on him.”
