TRF Day at Keeneland
Today Keeneland celebrates the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation on their 40th anniversary. Founded in 1983, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is a national organization devoted to saving Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete at the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse, and slaughter. In 2023 the TRF celebrates four decades of Saving Horses and Changing lives with gratitude for all who have made this work possible.
As the oldest Thoroughbred rescue in the country, the TRF provides lifelong sanctuary to retired Thoroughbreds throughout their lifetime. Caring for a herd of 425 retired racehorses living at 15 farms across the US, the TRF is best known for its pioneering TRF Second Chances program. At eight correctional facilities across the US, including one juvenile justice facility, the TRF program offers second careers to retired racehorses and a second chance at life for program graduates upon release from prison. In Lexington, the TRF Second Chances Program at Blackburn Correctional Complex has been Saving Horses and Changing Lives for more than twenty years.
