Ship In


All vans and trailers must report to the main chute near the stable office upon arrival to the grounds.

Van drivers must present the following documentation to the chute clerk prior to horses being unloaded. 

  • Names of horses seeking entry
  • Name of corresponding trainer 
  • Horses’ previous location
  • Current Coggins for each horse
  • Current health cert with EHV-1 vaccination date for each horse

If all paperwork is satisfactory and in order, the chute clerk will present the driver with an “ok to unload” slip and direct horses to the assigned barn.

Horses seeking exit from the grounds must obtain an “out slip” for each horse from the Stable Office which includes:

  • Name of horse seeking exit
  • Name of corresponding trainer
  • Location where horse is shipping

The “out slip” must be presented to the security personnel posted at each gate exit for departure from the Keeneland grounds to grant exit.

If you have a veterinary emergency and need to transport a horse off the grounds immediately during overnight hours, please call Keeneland security (859) 288-4296.

Horseman Traffic And Parking


The horse path between barn rows 20 and 30 is restricted to credentialed vehicles only during racing and training hours.

  • Trainers stabled in row 20 barns may have assigned parking spaces along the main road. 
  • Trainers stabled in row 30 barns may have assigned parking spaces along Barn 30 facing the Track Kitchen.
  • All other stable employees, including grooms, hot walkers, exercise riders and assistant trainers have a designated parking lot between Barn 9 and the Track Kitchen. Individuals must present his/her KHRC license and access will be granted on a first come, first served basis.

Keeneland’s main track (dirt) is open seven days a week from 5:30-10 a.m. The main track has 2 breaks in the morning - #1 from 7-7:30 a.m. and #2 from 8:30-9 a.m.

Reserved Speed Work Window: 10 minutes after each renovation break reserved for horses that are breezing

Keeneland’s training track (Polytrack) is open seven days a week from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with no renovation break.

Training Requirements


Only horses who are stabled at Keeneland are permitted to work or exercise on Keeneland’s training surfaces, and those who wish to conduct a work must complete a series of steps in advance.

Gate Schooling


The starter and assistant starters are available for gate schooling in the 4 ½ f chute on the main track. Starting on Tuesday, May 18th the Keeneland Starting Gate will open :30 minutes earlier daily with a new start time of 6 a.m. The new hours for the Starting Gate will now be Tuesday – Sunday from 6 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Racing Entry Requirements


Trainers who wish to enter a horse at Keeneland are required to complete a series of steps prior to entry

2-Year-Old Lasix Restriction


Keeneland will ban the race-day use of Lasix in all 2-year-old races under the International Medication Protocol authority granted in 810 KAR 8:050 of the Kentucky Administrative Regulations.

All trainers are required to post "In Today" signage on the stall door for every horse racing. Signs are available for pick up from the Stable Office upon ship in. All signs should be posted by 7:30 am each race day.

Horse and Jockey

Riders Up


All riders will be called to their mounts in the Saddling Paddock. Horses may be saddled in the all-weather stalls or under the trees, but must report to the tree marked with their corresponding post position number. The Paddock Judge will call for riders up and horses will file on to the path in post-position order. The outrider will lead horses across the walking ring, making a left turn around the ring and out through the tunnel.
